About This Quiz

In a motor vehicle, one is just as crucial as the other.

Without either an engine or a transmission, be it automatic or manual, a car is not going anywhere.

Some would say the engine is more critical but without the transmission, all that power generated by the engine cannot be transferred into motion.

And I am sure you will agree, a car that doesn't move is pretty useless.

Both the transmission system and the engine on your car are nothing short of a technological miracle filled with thousands and thousands of moving parts, big and small, each as important as the next. Without these parts, your car is not worth much.

As an auto nut, you may be aware of some of them, be it parts of the engine or the transmission. Now, we not going to ask you to name them in this quiz, we just want you to be able to tell if they come from the engine or the transmission by looking at a single image.

Seem easy? It really isn't. This is going to test you like never before! But with a little thought and maybe some luck, you should ace it.

Good Luck!

Found above the cylinder, the cylinder head is the area the piston compresses into as it moves. It also houses intake and exhaust valves, springs and lifters and the combustion chamber.

A crucial part of the transmission, the planetary gear set helps to make all the various ratios that the gears in the transmission can produce. It consists of the sun, planetary and ring gears.

This part is essential to how your engine runs. It allows the fuel/air mixture into the cylinder of the engine where it will combust, causing the engine to run. It does this by evenly distributing the air/fuel mixture to the intake ports.

Found in cars with automatic transmissions, a torque converter fulfills the same role as a clutch in a manual transmission car. Essentially, it keeps the engine turning over when the vehicle comes to a halt.

A thermostat ensures that coolant is only pumped from radiator once the engine has warmed up sufficiently.

This pump ensures that coolant kept in the radiator is moved through the car's coolant system, keeping the engine at an optimum temperature.

An integral part of modern engines, and engine control unit or ECU is a series of sensors that ensure that the engine runs optimally.

The timing belt ensures that the camshaft opens and closes the valves in the engine at the right time so as to ensure that that engine runs at 100 percent efficiency.

Made from steel, timing bands are straps that are found in the transmission on drums within it. These drums will rotate when the band is not pressed against it to grip it. Stopping their rotating means components within the transmission interact in different ways, depending on what the driver is doing in terms of gear selection.

In modern automatic transmission systems, sensors on the engine and within the transmission itself track speed, the position of the throttle, the speed of the engine and other factors to control shift points.

Also known as a lifter or cam follower, tappets are found on the camshaft in the engine. As the camshaft rotates, they move vertically, lifting the valves.

In automatic transmissions, the valve body is vitally important. It helps direct hydraulic fluid to valves in the transmission that in turn engage the appropriate band servo or clutch pack needed at that time.

The sump is the reservoir where the oil used to lubricate the engine sits when it is not running.

Does the car part in the image belong to the engine or transmission?

Combustion in the engine causes the pistons to move. This, in turn, moves the crankshaft and moves the car forward or backward, depending on the gear selected.

The valves within an engine open and close in sequence to let the air and fuel mixture in. They then seal when combustion takes place and finally let the gases out.

The sun gear is the central gear in the planetary gear system in the transmission.

In simple terms, a turbocharger pushes more air into the engine, which in turn creates more power as more fuel is burned.

This reservoir holds coolant which is used to keep the engine cool during operation. It also helps to regulate the coolant to the right temperature before passing it back into the system.

There are various seals and gaskets found within the transmission system. This ensures that the vital hydraulic fluid does not leak out of the system.

Made from steel, clutch packs are found in the transmission on drums within it. These drums will rotate when the pack is not pressed against it to grip it. Stopping their rotating means components within the transmission interact in different ways, depending on what the driver is doing in terms of gear selection.

Found in manual transmissions, a flywheel does two things. First of all, it provides a toothed gear for the starter motor to engage on, rotating the engine on startup. Secondly, it is used to push torque from the car's engine to its transmission by use of the clutch.
